My view on professional English study

I feel a little disappointed when I enter this zone. English is a powerful language in the world. If you want more people understand your research, you have to write it in English. My major, biomedical engeering, which is an advanced science, need a lot of international communion. Therefore, English is of critical importace. You have to read English paper and maybe you yourself have to write English essays. However, what you learn should be professional. Take my major for example, OCT means optical coherence tomography, which is a medical imaging technique employing low-coherence inteferometry to image the morphology of biological tissue or non-biological semitransparent composite materials. What I mean is that you should learn more besides common English, for example, some terms. But first you should learn common English well, or else, you may can’t understand English papers, not to mention the terms, even you know the meaning of every word, you may can’t understand the whole sentence.

You are right. We should first lay a good foundation in general English, then learn the terms and special features of English for special purposes.
