The Sichuan provincial seismological bureau said more than 1,180 tremors up to six magnitude have been recorded as of 5:00 am on May 13. In another badly-hit city of Mianzhu, which is less than 50 kilometers away from the quake epicenter, more than 1,000 people were reported dead and another 5,000 were buried as of 11:30 pm on Monday, according to the local government. 在上述报道中,出现了一些跟地震(earthquake)相关的词汇 比如:tremor(A shaking or vibrating movement, as of the earth)就是“振动、颤动”的意思,earth tremor一般表示“轻微地震”。 magnitude(A measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake, as indicated on the Richter Scale里氏震级中用以衡量地震强度的单位)就是“震级”,而epicenter(the point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake)指的就是“地震中心”或“震中”。

Imports of Barbie dolls and other Western toys will have destructive cultural and social consequences in Iran, the Iranian top prosecutor was quoted as saying on Monday. Iran's clerical establishment often rails against the perceived dangers of US-inspired culture and consumerism, branding it "Westoxication." But young Iranians are often keen consumers of such music, films and other goods from the West. Iconic toy brands can be bought in children's shops in the capital Tehran and elsewhere. "The appearance of personalities such as Barbie, Batman, Spiderman and Harry Potter and ... computer games and movies are all a danger warning to the officials in the cultural arena," said Prosecutor General Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi in a letter to Vice President Parviz Davoudi published in the Mardom Salari daily. Najafabadi, a high-ranking cleric, said Iran was the world's third biggest importer of toys and suggested this posed a threat to the "personality and identity" of the new generation. "The unrestrained entry of this sort of imported toys ... will bring destructive cultural and social consequences in their wake," he wrote. He added many toys were smuggled into Iran and accused importers of concentrating on profits at the expense of cultural values.

Robots seen doing work of 3.5 mln people in Japan Robots could fill the jobs of 3.5 million people in Japan by 2025, a thinktank says, helping to avert worker shortages as the country's population shrinks. Japan faces a 16 percent slide in the size of its workforce by 2030 while the number of elderly will mushroom, the government estimates, raising worries about who will do the work in a country unused to, and unwilling to contemplate large-scale immigration. The thinktank, the Machine Industry Memorial Foundation, says robots could help fill the gaps, ranging from microsized capsules that detect lesions to high-tech vacuum cleaners. Rather than each robot replacing one person, the foundation said in a report that robots could make time for people to focus on more important things.

He is Zheng Yaqi ...
Zheng Yaqi, son of Zheng Yuanjie, the “King of Children's Tales,” looks like his peers in appearance, but his experience of growing up was different from others. Homeschooling Right after he finished his middle school entrance exam, Zheng Yaqi dropped out of school forever. After that, his father turned a spare room into a classroom and taught him at home. His father wrote some interesting textbooks for him, like rearranging1 the 419 crimes in Chinese Criminal Law into 419 fairy tales. They had three classes every afternoon. At dusk, his father always took him for a walk along the riverbank, and discussed with him various topics from TV or books. Zheng Yaqi finished the six-year middle school education in three years, and graduated from this special “school.” “Black hole” in communication His father once worried that, he might not be able to get along well with his peers. But at a cyber acquaintances'2 gathering, his father became confident of his social ability. “The first gathering with cyber acquaintances happened a half year after I left school, and it was fantastic. They were all men, and a lot older than me. We talked about computers and discussed designing a website together. They pointed at me, saying that when I was 18, we would establish a company together, and I could be the boss.”Recalling things that happened, Zheng Yaqi can't help being excited, “That's more fun than staying with peers.” Cyber acquaintances are the most important tie between him and the outside world, so 80% of his contacts listed in his address book are cyber acquaintances. Grown up When he was 16, his father “warned” him by saying, “I'll give you whatever you want before you turn 18. But after, I won't care much about you, and by contrast, you should give me whatever I want.” When his 18th birthday was approaching, he began thinking about applying for a job. Therefore, he sent resumes to many posts he favored via the Internet. “But, most got no reply,” he said. “Maybe they were surprised about my elementary school education.” By chance, one of his friends was looking for someone, who could work as an egg porter at the supermarket, for 0.5 yuan per box. Facing lots of difficulties in job hunting, Zheng Yaqi said, “I'll take this job. At least I can earn some for my petrol.” Then every day, he drove his Audi A6—his 18th birthday gift—to work in the supermarket. He did that for three months. Later, he heard that, a newspaper was looking for a network technician3, so he applied for it. But they were also worried about his elementary education. He practiced his technique right in front of the computer, and showed the employers web pages he had designed. He promised to make a website for the newspaper for free. He started work the next day, and was promoted to the director of network department in less than a year. But now, 23-year-old Zheng Yaqi is a boss. In January 2005, he made an investment4 with his savings, and launched Pi Pilu, with himself as the editor in chief. And the only writer—his father, Zheng Yuanjie.

In China, everybo...

Xu Sanduo is not a godfather. He is not a father. He is not even a lout. He is, however, a character whose mix of flaws and charms has made him an unlikely television phenomenon who seems perfectly crafted for his time. And his story -- violent, exotic, unlike the life of almost anyone watching at home -- has somehow emerged as China's national Rorschach test. "Soldier Sortie," a dramatic series, premiered on Chinese state television in 2006. In the first episode, viewers meet Xu, the shy, simple son of a peasant. The father complains that the boy is too dim to plant crops. A drunk who spends most of his time smacking around his three sons, the father wants to pawn off the youngest, Xu, on the army, which seems like a singularly unsuitable fit. When the recruiter arrives to take a look, the father thrashes Xu for eating too fast and making a bad impression. Then he orders Xu to show off his physical strength ("Climb a tree!"). The recruiter takes pity on Xu and signs him up just to get him away from the father, proclaiming, "In one year, I'll turn your son into an awe-inspiring soldier." Sure enough, the country boy blossoms and becomes a special forces star. Much of the series is spent following his training, showing him carry heavy logs and wriggle through the mud. At other moments, he fights valiantly against unnamed foreign foes. The pyrotechnics are impressively lifelike and modern, in contrast to other state-television war dramas that are hung up on the Red Army's victories half a century ago, with brooding Mao Tse-tung look-alikes in pancake makeup and stick-on hair, waxing nobly. Where Soprano is cruel, Xu's flaw is dimness. But his determination to succeed through hard work seems refreshing in today's China, in which connections and canny strategy seem to guarantee success more often than simple perseverance. A typical fan is Xu Bo, a 23-year-old college student in the eastern city of Hangzhou, who is facing uncertain job prospects with no clear way to get ahead. "It's not only me," Xu said. "My grandfather, my father, my classmates, we all love it. I watched it two or three times and cried over and over."

Premier Wen Jiabao expressed "deep apologies" to the stranded passengers at Changsha railway station in Hunan, who are eager to go home for the Spring Festival holiday. "Early festival greetings to you," Wen said. The convoy was stranded in the desert.

China may include some traditional festivals, such as Tomb-Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, as part of its official holidays, sources said.[Agencies] China may include some traditional festivals, such as Tomb-Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, as part of its official holidays, sources said. The Chinese government has formed a preliminary plan on the new legal holiday arrangement and the plan will be released "in the near future". After that, public opinion will be sought on the Internet. As an ancient country with a civilized history of more than 5,000 years, some traditional festivals represent part of the China's cultural heritage. However, current legal holiday arrangements only include the Spring Festival, traditionally held in January or February. Cai Jiming, a Tsinghua University professor and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said traditional festivals as legal holidays would help preserve the folk customs. "The nation's traditional culture will find ways to develop," he said. Feng Jicai, a renowned Chinese writer who champions folk customs, said the cultural meaning of Chinese traditional festivals should be restored and emphasized, especially with increasing globalization. Chinese people currently have 10 days of legal holidays. Three days each are given for the May Day, National Day and Spring Festival breaks, with one day for New Year's Day. The weekends on one side of the first three holidays are designated as two working days, and people enjoy two days off on the working days, making the holidays seven consecutive days. Millions of Chinese travel during the holidays, thus earning them the moniker of "Golden Week". Regarded as one of the most important days on the Chinese calendar, Tomb-Sweeping, or the Qingming Festival, which usually occurs on April 4 or 5, was established by a Chinese emperor in memory of a loyal official who sacrificed himself to save the monarch's life more than 2,500 years ago. The day gradually became a traditional time for paying homage to departed ancestors. The Dragon Boat Festival has been celebrated for thousands of years to commemorate Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet who lived in the state of Chu during the Warring States period (475 B.C. to 221 B.C.). He drowned himself in the Miluo River in today's Hunan Province in 278 B.C., on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, hoping his death would alert the king to revitalize the kingdom. The tradition arose that on the day of his death dragon boat races would be held and people should eat "zongzi," glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. The Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar, is considered an occasion for a re-union of family members and loved ones. On the day, they would eat moon cakes and light lanterns while enjoying the full moon - an auspicious symbol of abundance, harmony and luck. The festival was flavored by the legend of Chang'e, a "lonely fairy on the moon." According to legend, she was the beautiful wife of Hou Yi, a hero who shot down nine suns that scorched the earth. He was slain by his apprentice Feng Meng. Threatened by the murderer, Chang'e drank an elixir and "flew to the moon." China introduced the "Golden week" holidays in 1999 in a bid to boost domestic consumption. It was reported that tourism revenue had increased from 14.1 billion yuan (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) during the 1999 National Day holiday to 64.2 billion yuan during the recent Golden Week in October. Statistics revealed that in 2001 alone, tourist numbers reach 780 million, much higher than the 1999 figure of 240 million. In addition, outbound Chinese tourism rose to 12.13 million in 2001, a huge jump from 3 million in the early 1990s. But after several years of experience and complaints about overcrowding, poor service, a scarcity of hotel rooms and damage to scenic spots, especially historic sites, during the break, the Golden Week breaks have spurred debate over the merits of the week-long holiday concept. Last year, Tsinghua professor Cai proposed shortening the National Day and May Day holidays from three days to one day and distributing the days to celebrate four traditional festivals - the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Day, Tomb-Sweeping Day and New Year's Eve. Other scholars have also reiterated their belief that the important traditional Chinese festivals should be made public holidays. "The current holiday system does not accord with the long-standing customs of Chinese people," said Chinese Folklore Society President Liu Quili. Huang Tao, an associate professor at the People's University of China in Beijing, said the most effective measures to protect cultural festivals were to make traditional festivals legal holidays to enable more people to understand the importance of the tradition. On Monday, the Chinese government released draft regulations on paid vacations for soliciting public opinion. The regulations are believed to further protect a worker's right to rest. China has not fully established a paid vacation system until now. In 1991, a circular from the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council officially said employees were entitled to vacation of up to two weeks. However, in practice, some employees had not enjoyed paid vacations for various reasons and were not compensated as detailed measures were not in place. Thus, some of the public is worried that if the Golden Week holidays are adjusted or decreased, they would find it more difficult to take compulsory paid vacation. The draft regulations stipulate that legal holidays and weekends will not be included as paid vacation.

Joy in living comes from having fine emotions, trusting them, giving them the freedom of a bird in the open. Joy in living can never be assumed as a pose, or put on from the outside a mask. People who have this joy don’t need to talk about it, they radiate it. They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight into other lives as nature as a bird sings. We can never get it from working for it directly. It comes, like happiness, to those who are aiming at something higher. It’s a byproduct of great, simple living. The joy of living comes from what we put into our living, not from what we seek to get from it.

I am the wind, the gentle wind; I am the clouds, the slow, drifting clouds; I am the water, the silent water; I am the mountains, the boundless mountains… If you so want, I will be the gentle wind that will wrap around your lonely spirit! If you so desire, I will be the slow, drifting clouds that will unquestioningly be your support! If you so wish, I will be that silent water, without a murmur, protecting you by your side. If you so will, I will love you unrelentingly, just like those boundless, unbroken mountain ranges and valleys! But, I regret I am not the wind and not able to take care of you. I hate that I am not the clouds and not able to bring you warmth; I pity myself that I am not the water and not able to be so pure; I am angry that I am not the mountains and not able to have my love will be as immovable as I would like. I can only be myself this time, my mortal, earthly self, my only self, the only self that I can ever hope to be. I thirst for love but I do not understand her deep mystery. I strive for transcendence but I would rather be silent and nameless. I want to be mature but I would rather remain innocent. I would like that she love me, but I do not know even if I truly love her! Endless searching, thirsting, striving, pursuing-where are my goals? Where is my future? In this mundane world, I am one lonely speck; in this universe I am a powerless particle of dust. My love, thought beautiful, is nothing great in itself. And so, I ask only to live as well as I can. In truth, there is no need to live one‘s life basking in glory, rising above men—— so long as one’s life has some value, has some security… Fearless and capricious, love will cause me great pain. Youth, transient and inconstant, will bring me loneliness. Work, busy and mindless, will make me lost. I am just searching for and waiting for some of that which shines, that which is radiant in life…

Former Spice Girls star Victoria Beckham has denied she has fallen out with pal Katie Holmes, despite reports to the contrary. The pair has been close friends since Beckham moved to Los Angeles last year - but rumors the pals have drifted apart came to a head last week when the Mad Money star failed to show at the singer's recent 34th birthday celebrations. And internet reports suggest Holmes snubbed Beckham at a recent restaurant encounter. No reason for the fall-out has been given, and now a representative for Beckham has dismissed the speculation, claiming Beckham and her husband David, are still good friends with Holmes and her partner Tom Cruise. Beckham's spokesman says, "They all had a drink together, and Tom and Katie and David and Victoria were all out for dinner together last Friday."

The Mothers(A good article) A little boy asked his mother "Why are you crying?“ 一个男孩问他的妈妈:“ 你为什么要哭呢?” "Because I'm a woman," she told him. "I don't understand," he said. His mum just hugged him and said, "And you never will" 他妈妈抱起他说:“你永远不会懂得” Later the little boy asked his father, "Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?” "All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say. The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry. Finally he put in a call to God; and when God got on the phone, he asked, "God, why do women cry so easily?“ 最后,他打电话给上帝;当上帝拿起电话时,他问道:“上帝,女人为什么那么容易哭泣呢?” God said: "When I made the woman she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort" 上帝回答说:“当我创造女人时,让她很特别. I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children" 我让她的内心很坚强,能够承受分娩的痛苦和忍受自己孩子多次的拒绝。 "I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining " 我赋予她耐心使她在别人放弃的时候继续坚持,并且无怨无悔的照顾自己的家人渡过疾病和疲劳。 I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly" 我赋予她在任何情况下都会爱孩子的感情,即使她的孩子伤害了她。 "I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart" 我赋予她包容她丈夫过错的坚强和用他的勒骨塑成她来保护他的心。 "I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly" 我赋予她智慧让她知道一个好丈夫是绝不会伤害他的妻子的,但有时我也会考验她支持自己丈夫的决心和坚强 "And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. This is hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed."

Tomb-Sweeping Day...

All Souls' Day Qing Ming is a time to remember the dead and the dearly departed. More important, it is a period to honour and to pay respect to one's deceased ancestors and family members. Because it reinforces the ethic of filial piety, Qing Ming is a major Chinese festival. Literally meaning "clear" (Qing) and "bright" (Ming), this Chinese festival falls in early spring, on the 106th day after the winter solstice. It is a "spring" festival, and it is an occasion for the whole family to leave the home and to sweep the graves of their forebears. Chinese being practical people this sweeping of the graves is given an extended period, that is, 10 days before and after Qing Ming day. Among some dialect groups a whole month is allocated.

But after, I won't care much about you, and by contrast, you should give me whatever
